Exercising through the holiday season can be a challenge. Our schedules change, and the abundance of festive food can easily disrupt our fitness and wellness goals. Interestingly, we often don’t give ourselves enough grace during this time, even though the spirit of the holidays is all about extending kindness to others and expressing gratitude for our blessings.
Movement is a gift. Every day, we have the opportunity to choose how we engage our bodies. Movement can look different for everyone, and even small, intentional actions can yield significant benefits. Let’s consider one of the most fundamental movements we do daily: breathing. As Joseph Pilates wisely said, “Breathing is the first act of life and the last. Our very life depends on it.”
In Pilates, breath is essential. It facilitates all movements within our exercises. We inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth, letting out a sigh as if we’re fogging a mirror. Try this: take a moment to sit up tall or lie down. Inhale deeply through your nose and exhale through your mouth, as if you’re fogging a mirror. Notice how your abdominals respond. This breathing technique engages the transverse abdominals, creating stability and elongation in the spine. It also activates the diaphragm, engages the pelvic floor, and promotes abdominal and oblique strengthening. Who knew that simply lying on your back and breathing intentionally could offer an effective ab workout?
Now, let’s take it a step further. During the holidays, I encourage you to dedicate just five minutes a day to focus on Pilates breathing and select two exercises that complement this practice. My go-to exercises are bridging with spinal articulation and toe taps. Both are foundational pre-Pilates movements that promote control and prepare you for larger movements. Another favorite of mine is upper ab curls, where you exhale as you rise, along with the single leg stretch from the series of five.
If you want to dive deeper, consider revisiting our Powerhouse series. These exercises are perfect for coordinating breath and strengthening your core. You can also schedule a one-on-one session with me to create a sustainable plan tailored to your needs, especially when attending class isn’t possible.
Ultimately, our goal at BTC is to empower you with knowledge and skills to move your body effectively and meaningfully. Let’s embrace movement and grace this holiday season!
