Psychology Today states that CENTERING ONESELF IS GOING BACK TO A PLACE YOU KNOW YOU NEED WHEN YOU FEEL LOST.

Deep thoughts for Pilates,   but this directly relates to the POWERHOUSE!  When we engage in exercise and physical activity and our core unit isn’t working for us it can actually make the exercises feel more difficult!!  When we are less connected, we run the risk of hurting ourselves!! This ability to connect with a movement is CRUCIAL for those dealing with spinal issues or recovering from injury or surgery.  This is exactly why we need to set the foundation of movement from THE POWERHOUSE. In fact, it is so important, we created a free 5 day series to FIND YOUR POWERHOUSE. Each day is less than 5 minutes and you will FIND that powerhouse & strengthen what is often referred to as the CORE.

So what muscles make up the POWERHOUSE?  It is made up of the DIAPHRAGM (why we emphasize breathing so much), PELVIC FLOOR, TRANSVERSE ABDOMINUS (lower abs) and MULTIFIDI (at the lower back).  Together, these muscles support the spine and are vital for healthy movement.  Beyond that ‘inner unit’, we have all the muscles attaching to the spine and pelvis. Pilates exercises work on the fact we have to balance movement with being able to stabilize.

Here’s a little history lesson.  The term POWERHOUSE was coined by Joseph Pilates, the creator and inventor of Contrology (what we now refer to as ‘pilates’).  He also engineered equipment VERY similar to what we still use today: the Universal Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Magic Circle, Spine Corrector, Ladder Barrel,  and much much more!  If you’d like to dive a little deeper into Joseph Pilates life and work, check it out here.   He based all of his training around establishing a strong center. This ‘powerhouse’ creates the foundation for better movement all around.  The idea is that the strong center creates a ripple effect like a pebble being skipped in the water.  This physically strong center also contributes to a strong mind. The mind & body connection can take our physical successes and carry into other aspects of our lives.  He put it this way, “The mind, when housed within a healthful body, possesses a glorious sense of power.”  For more Pilates quotes check out his book, Return to Life.  I highly recommend it!

The question you may now be asking yourself.  HOW DO I ACTIVATE AND ENGAGE MY POWERHOUSE?  Or maybe you’re realizing those strong abs don’t just come from endless sit-ups!! We have made it so easy to get started!  Not only could you join us for a class to learn more, but we have something else for you too!

We’ve created a five day series to FIND YOUR POWERHOUSE! I will lead you through 5 key exercises to get started.  Some of his exercises are very challenging but there is always a way to modify to for your needs.  The most important thing is to listen to YOUR body, breathe and focus on what YOU are doing.  So let’s take this small challenge together!!  Who’s in??
