I just returned from an amazing week of learning more about scoliosis! I spent 6 days with an amazing group of PT’s learning from Hagit Berdeshevsky with SSOL in NYC. Each day was a full day of learning, but I did get to spend a little time each day walking around the beautiful Central Park.
Now let’s get to what matters most!
HOW CAN I FIX MY SCOLIOSIS?
Let’s start by setting the right expectations.
There are 2 aspects of the changes in the body associated with scoliosis: STRUCTURAL and POSTURAL. The structural component is defined by the bony & soft tissue changes. The POSTURAL component contributes to increase in spinal curves. This can look like an increase in the side to side imbalance as well as the prominences becoming more prominent. This is the component we are targeting with the Schroth Method. We address the POSTURAL changes to improve the symmetry in how the spine is loaded. This is especially important during growth as bones are still developing. We want to allow those bones to grow and develop in the best possible position. If left alone, the postural component can further feed into curve progression.
The Schroth Method is designed to improve posture and function, reduce curve progression, & in some cases reduce pain. Some times our goals will include improving breathing capacity, or effectiveness of bracing. In some situations, we are preventing or delaying surgery. (side note: There are times surgery is the best next step & it is good to have all the information to navigate this type of difficult decision.)
WHAT TO EXPECT IN A TREATMENT:
Treatment starts with learning your curve so you know the ideal position for your curve type. We build on that key component by teaching strategies of EXPANSION to areas that are harder to maintain against gravity. From there we work on muscle ACTIVATION to strengthen that correction.
I will guide you through your specific correction based on our clinical exam along with your xrays. PRO TIP: ALWAYS REQUEST A COPY OF YOUR X-RAYS! This will be important for your records & they can be difficult to get them later. The standard scoliosis study includes a side view and a P-A view x-ray. Ideally this includes the base of the head down to the pelvis with the femurs in view.
Now I wish I could wrap this article up with a precise promise of how much your curve will improve, but I can’t. Scoliosis is influenced by multiple factors & no one can predict with certainty what degree improvement you can attain. I can promise you I will EMPOWER you with the knowledge to help you know your curve & know the optimal position as you move forward in your daily life.
