The new Guardians of the Galaxy opened last weekend and it has me thinking about The Avengers. More specifically, it is actually Spider-Man on my mind. When Spider-Man is learning about his powers he is taught “with great power comes great responsibility.” I’ve always thought this is such a good quote!
As a Physical Therapist, I am the movement specialist of the medical field. The majority of issues in the body stem from something moving too much or something not moving enough. Today I’m talking about the issue of too much motion, which is called hypermobility. Just like a lot of power, too much motion ALSO comes with great responsibility. We have to take the responsibility to learn how to control that motion so we don’t let other issues develop.
When too much motion happens at a joint it can put extra strain on the ligaments and muscles around those joints and lead to pain or other problems. Scoliosis is defined as a torsion of the spine commonly the area called the apex (the spinal level or levels with most rotation) are often stiff. The body creates its own work- around by moving more somewhere else. This makes the lower back susceptible to becoming hypermobile. The specific are that is stiff or more mobile will vary based on your specific curve.
So what do we do about it? Let’s think “with great MOBILITY comes great responsibility”. Cheesy, I know, but it is absolutely accurate! When you work on controlling the extra motion, you can prevent extra strain on the ligaments and muscles around those joints. This will help to prevent leading to pain or other problems at the body.
Watch now for two ways to check your low back CONTROL and how you can improve it. To learn ways to address your specific curve and how it impacts your body, you need to work with a specialist. Schedule a consult today or find a scoliosis specialist in your area.
