Let’s take a step back and consider how the spine is supported when we are walking. We spend a lot of time on our feet! They are a big support for our bodies as we walk, run, jump, and so many other things! That is why it is important we have good control from the ground up.
To support our body well, our feet need to be both mobile and stable. Let’s think for a minute about walking barefoot along the beach. Just close your eyes and imagine walking your way to the water. Think about how your foot has to bend and move with the sand. Even as your foot has to move, it still has to be stable enough that it remains steady as you pick your other foot up and move it ahead. All this with barely a thought about it UNLESS it’s not working well. Then all of a sudden you are going to be very aware of the fact that walking on sand can be hard!
Take off your shoes and see how you do with these 2 challenges! Remember your feet have to have a good ability to move AND a good ability to stabilize.
